Assessments

There are three principal means of acquiring knowledge available to us: observation of nature, reflection, and experimentation. Observation collects facts; reflection combines them; experimentation verifies the result of that combination. Our observation of nature must be diligent, our reflection profound, and our experiments exact. We rarely see these three means combined; and for this reason, creative geniuses are not common.

~Denis Diderot (1713–84), French philosopher. On the Interpretation of Nature, no. 15 (1753; repr. in Selected Writings, ed. by Lester G. Crocker, 1966).

Syllabus Description of Evaluation The syllabus is visible to prospective students as they ponder taking the class. Among other elements, the syllabus explains the basics of the grading system. Included are relative weights of various assignments. A link to the Rubric for Participation is included.

Evaluation Checklist for Module 4. Each module has an evaluation checklist. Learner's are asked to fill out this form at the end of each module. This form acts as both an organizer and a self-evaluation guide. At the bottom of the checklist you will find criteria for performance evaluation. Additionally there is a text entry box prompting questions for the instructor. When the user clicks the submit button, the contents of the form are mailed to the instructor. This enables a 'behind the scenes' email based discussion.

This three point rubric provides criteria explaining Exemplary, Proficient, and Incomplete levels of performance.

Reflective Journal  This page explains the purpose for the reflective journal. Technologies for sharing journal reflections are explained.

Reflective Journal Prompts Thematic prompts are provided for each module.  These prompts are part of the weekly activities section. This link takes you to the journal prompts for Module 4: Looking at Our Own Attitudes.
