Module 6: Activities
Your Multicultural Project

In our last module you will plan a meaningful multicultural experience for your students. The final project, an Action Plan based on your project choice, will help pave the way to a successful experience. We will also work in small groups for a peer review of Action Plans. The purpose of a peer review is to provide an attentive and thoughtful review of each other's work and ideas. Suggestions, reactions, and the 'outside' perspective can be invaluable.

Timeline:

  • Activities 1 - 3 This week.
  • Activities 4 - 7 Next week.

Activity 1: Introduction and Objectives

Review the introduction, objectives, and evaluation rubric for this module.

Activity 2 : Briefly Explain Your Project Choice

Selecting a project was an important decision. (One we made back in Mdoule 3.) As teachers, we have to balance our idealism against the practicalities of time allocation and technology access. In a pragraph provide an overview of your project

Activity 3: Develop Your Multicultural Project

Each project has unique demands. Review the resources provided and complete as much of the Multicultural Project as you can at this time. It is understood, that the Multicultural Project presentaton is flexible and can be amended as needed. The more specific the information you can provide the better.

You may adapt the plan to any local format, as long as you address the required elements. Feel free to ask questions via the class email list or specifically to individuals who are working on a similar project.

No posting is required for this activity.

Activity 4: Peer Review of Your Multicultural Project

When you have completed a solid first draft of your Project Plan, exchange plans with members of your small group.

The peer review process brings perspective and inspiration. However, you are the one that will teach this plan. You are free to consider advice, but not required to make any changes based on the feedback.

Additionally, the peer review is a convenience and service… and should not be an impediment to completing your work. It is understood, that the timing might not work. If you are unable to exchange plans with one or more of your team members-- so be it. You may complete the project whenever to meet the needs of your schedule. No posts to the group e-mail list are required.

Hints for success:

  • Respond quickly to all email within your group. If you are not going to be available, let your team members know ASAP. Explicit and timely communication is important.
  • Exchange plans early in the module.
  • Use the small group Quick Topic Message System to organize your peer review.
  • Use a word processor that allows you to save files in HTML. Then use the Quick Document Review System to share your Action plans. (Note: I haven't set up Document Reviews for you.)
  • Offer timely, specific, and detailed feedback to your partners.
  • Ask questions if you are confused about an element of the Project Plan.
  • Try to anticipate problems your partner might experience while teaching their project and share your thoughts and suggestions.
  • Offer additional resources.
  • Offer proofreading as needed.
  • Do NOT delay submitting your Project Plan for final publication if one member of your group is unavailable.

  2. Review the Action plans of your colleagues. Offer feedback to your colleagues via the course e-mail list. (Optional)

Activity 6: Publish Your Final Reflective Journal

You have been keeping a reflective journal for the entire class. Now is the time to review your entries and reflect on what you have learned during our time together. Consider any or all of these questions as you compose your final Reflective Jjournal entry.

***Unlike your previous Journal entries, please post your thoughts to the e-mail list.

  • After reviewing all of your Reflective Journals, do you see themes in your thinking?
  • Is the online venue an effective place for working on multicultural issues? What are the strengths and weaknesses of working online?
  • How will your multicultural project influence the attitudes and beliefs of your school? What do you hope will happen?
  • How would you describe your learning during this class? Will your teaching change because of your experiences in this class?
  • Have your beliefs changed or been affirmed by what you have learned in this class?
  • Is it possible to transform education and change the world by teaching with a multicultural perspective?
  • What are your final thoughts and reflections?
