Module 1: Readings
Building Our Community

Each week there are several required readings and many optional readings. The Readings List will provide more information than anyone can absorb in the short time we are together.

Tips On Reading During This Class

Consider book-marking sites that are particularly appealing to you. All resources for this course will remain open to you from now on. You can return whenever you want to review these materials.

Required Readings:

Culture Matters, Chapter Two: American Culture And American Diversity
Our readings begin with Culture Matters, an online text used by the Peace Corps to train volunteers. Culture Matters, will orient you to the issues. The text includes a number of interactive exercises that help you think about your cultural perspective. Please read all of Chapter Two, and work through the interactive exercises.

Defining of Multicultural Education
by Paul Gorski and Bob Covert (1996; 2000). Please read the entire article.

Rule 1: Remember the Human
Remember the Prime Directive of Netiquette: Those are real people out there! Review the accepted rules of online interaction.

Optional Readings:

A Guide to Setting Ground Rules by Paul Gorski
You are asked to post your ideas for discussion ground rules this week. Gorski's article will give you some ideas.

Multicultural Pavilion
This site provides resources and dialogues for educators, students, and activists. Created and maintained by Dr. Paul Gorski, this is one of the best multicultural sites on the Internet for K-12 teachers. Well worth a look!

Looking at Ourselves and Others
This online textbook is used by the Peace Corps to introduce the concepts of perspective, culture, and cross-cultural relations. You'll find a complete teacher's guide, several chapters of important information, lesson plans and a bibliography.

Voices From the Field
The complete publication can be downloaded in PDF format. This is a text that promotes reading and writing about the world, ourselves, and others. Appropriate for grades 7 - 12, materials are divided in two sections, Curriculum Units and Peace Corps stories. You'll find everything you need to create a reading and writing workshop based on multicultural issues.

Myths about Language Diversity and Literacy
You may be surprised how many of these myths you thought were true. Check your preconceptions by reading this short ERIC Digest article!

Multicultural Awareness Quiz by Paul Gorski
Here's an interesting way to check your knowledge of a variety of cultural issues.

Multicultural Awareness Quiz
I adapted Gorski's Multicultural Awareness Quiz to create this online interactive version.
